Despite suffering a catastrophic knee injury during a recent appearance at a QUINTET team-grappling competition, UFC featherweight contender, Cub Swanson is still planning a return to the Octagon before the end of 2020.

Representing Team-WEC at the grappling event - Swanson suffered a complete tear of his ACL and meniscus in his left knee during a scramble with former Elite XC and Strikeforce welterweight champion, Jake Shields. Swanson is expected to be sidelined for a considerable length of time as he recuperates from the injury setback. The 36-year-old managed to snap a four-fight skid recently, as he secured an entertaining, unanimous decision triumph over Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, Kron Gracie. Speaking exclusively with Colin Crandall, from MMA Power Hour, Swanson - who's attending Bellator 238 this weekend with teammate, Juan Archuleta,  outlined a targeted return to active-competition before the year's conclusion.

"I'll be fighting at the end of the year," Swanson told Crandall. "I had an unfortunate at the end of the year at that grappling tournament and I tore my ACL, so, I had to have surgery. It is a little bit of a long comeback but I'll be working all year. I'm upping it (training) next week to five times a week, doing physical training. I just gotta build back, it's going to take me about nine months to get to one-hundred percent, but I'll be fighting at the end of the year."

A return to the Octagon before 2020 draws to a close would mark an incredible nineteenth Octagon appearance for the Californian since the WEC merger back in 2011. During the course of his storied career, Swanson has managed eye-catching wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Charles Oliveira, Dennis Siver, and South Korean prospect Doo Ho Choi - in a pairing which was awarded 2016 Fight of the Year.
