'Stun Gun' Kim's smothering style beats Tarec Saffiedine:
UFC 207, seen an exciting Welterweight matchup between top 15 contenders Dong Hyun Kim and former Strikeforce Welterweight champion Tarec 'Sponge' Saffiedine. Both men are primarily strikers, but their techniques are unique. Tarec is renowned for his kickboxing ability, while 'The Stun Gun' is a very aggressive striker, but also is a very capable grappler and a fantastic judoka. The opening round bega with with Saffiedine missing an early switch kick. Saffiedine was playing Kim at his own game, as he aggressively sought a takedown. Kim was pushing the pace as expected early on, with Tarec constantly switching from Southpaw and Orthodox stances. Saffiedine was noticeably looking at the clock as the first round came to a close. Anyone's round. Kim continued his aggressive style in the opening stages of the second round, with Saffiedine looking rather cautious. Kim was marching Tarec down and missed with a spinning elbow attack. Saffiedine attacked with a good combination which ended with a leg kick, before 'Sponge' once again looked at the clock. Another close round. The third and final round began with both men swinging for the fences, both landing well, with Kim finding a home for an uppercut, while Saffiedine landed a good head kick. Kim landed a couple of good takedowns, before Saffiedine popped right back to his feet. Both men were exhausted when the bell sounded to mark the end of the bout. A hugely difficult fight to score, seen the judges award the victory to Dong Hyun Kim by way of split decision.
