Eddie Alvarez V Conor McGregor: What will go down.
The main event of UFC 205, sees a Lightweight title bout between current champion Eddie 'The Underground King' Alvarez and Dublin born Conor McGregor. 'The Notorious' will look to make history by adding the Lightweight crown to his Featherweight championship, as he vies to become the first man to hold two UFC title simultaneously. Alvarez shockingly stopped Brazilian Rafael Dos Anjos back in July for the Lightweight crown, and his first title defence comes against Featherweight king pin, McGregor. 'Mystic Mac' last defeated Nate Diaz in the pairs rematch at UFC 202 by majority decision, putting right the wrongs that occurred at UFC 196, where late Dos Anjos replacement Diaz, finished him in the second round by rear naked-choke after McGregor gassed out. McGregor was seemingly untouchable at the time, fresh from an earth shattering 13 second stoppage of the 10 year undefeated and at the time, P4P king José Aldo at UFC 194. Former 2x Bellator Lightweight champion Alvarez, suffered a UFC debut loss to Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone, but wins against Gilbert Melendez and Anthony 'Showtime' Pettis gave him an opportunity against Dos Anjos, which he grasped with both hands. Eddie is a good wrestler, but a better striker in many eyes, with McGregor showing his takedown defence improvements against Nate Diaz in their rematch, constantly denying the Jiu-Jitsu expert. There is a vast improvement to be seen if we compare that showing to McGregor's Interim UFC Featherweight title victory over, arguably better more established wrestler Chad Mendes, who took down the Crumlin native with ease. Alvarez must be very cautious with his forward pressure and momentum, with Conor's best attribute, his counter striking, literally on hand if Eddie marches him down. Alvarez must stick to a rigid game plan against the longer McGregor, and not allow himself to become emotionally invested in the contest, the way Aldo did, or it may be an earlier night for the Philadelphia native. McGregor's wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu must be on point for this matchup, and he must be very tactically minded when it comes to exhorting himself.
