Conor McGregor questions Dustin Poirier's placement in lightweight rankings

Former UFC two-weight world champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor, has taken to his official Twitter account this afternoon - questioning former interim 155-pound champion, and foe, Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier's placement above him in the lightweight pile. The Dubliner, who last competed against Donald Cerrone in a forty-second knockout at UFC 246 in January, is currently sitting at #3 in the official rankings - while Lafayette striker, Poirier, is one spot ahead of him at #2.

Poirier and McGregor have quite the history, clashing in a heated affair during the pair's time a division lower at featherweight. Poirier, who McGregor referred to as, "the pea" this afternoon, dropped his final defeat at 145-pounds to McGregor in an opening-round stoppage back at UFC 178 in September of 2014.

McGregor, 31, juggled the notion of how Poirier could be ahead of him in the official lightweight rankings, despite going "further" than the American Top Team staple in their respective meetings with current division pacesetter, Khabib 'The Eagle' Nurmagomedov.

"How is the pea ahead of me in rankings? I sparked him in 90 seconds. Went further against most recent foe, plus took a round. After two year (sic) layoff partying and or in jail/court. What a weird little game you guys play. I'll bide my time for now but watch this space. All bums."


Poirier replied to the original tweet from McGregor, which seems to have been removed from his official account.

"Because I've been fighting real contenders and you've been hand picking opponents."


McGregor, who Dana White earlier this week revealed had quizzed him about when he could fight on the promotion's upcoming UFC Fight Island events, is currently left out in the cold in regards to the lightweight title scenario. The former division titleholder was expected to finally pair up with Justin Gaethje at an event this summer, however, the withdrawal of the aforementioned Nurmagomedov, from his UFC 249 matchup with Tony Ferguson, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the insertion of Gaehtje, has now left plans not so clear in terms of who could await 'The Notorious' one next.

For Poirier, the 31-year-old was tentatively expected to headline an upcoming UFC Fight Night San Diego card in May against Kiwi finisher, Dan 'The Hangman' Hooker, however, that fight failed to materialise. Poirier has campaigned for a rematch with McGregor over the last handful of months, having returned from hip surgery after his submission defeat to Nurmagomedov last September in Abu Dhabi. The southpaw was again linked to a rescheduled pairing with Nate Diaz following the cancellation of their UFC 230 pairing in November of 2018 but maintains the Stockton fan favourite is retired.
