Tony 'El Cucuy' Ferguson will seemingly have to spend a significant period on the sidelines - following his UFC 249 interim UFC lightweight title defeat to Justin 'The Highlight' Gaethje last night. Ferguson, who suffered his first defeat in thirteen outings, also suffered a fractured orbital bone during his five-round war with Arizona's, Gaethje.
The 36-year-old failed to mount his usual offensive and pressure heavy approach beyond a late second-round uppercut which wobbled, Gaethje - finding himself on the wrong end of a counter left hook time and time again instead. With just over have of the final frame in the books, Ferguson was stung with a jab, and began excessively shaking his head - forcing veteran referee, Herb Dean to step in and call a halt. News of the eye injury was initially reported by Yahoo Sports reporter, Kevin Iole who had confirmed the injury with promotional president, Dana White.
For Ferguson, one-hundred significant strikes found their target on his chin for Gaethje, causing a series of abrasions, and cuts. The Oxnard native suffered significant swelling under his right eye, a cut on his right cheek, a cut to the left of his left eye, and a cut on his right shin - coming as resulted of Gaethje's abundance of checked leg kicks. After the headliner, Ferguson was transported to a hospital in Jacksonville to receive treatment.
This afternoon, Ferguson posted to his official Instagram page for the first time since last night's main event - where he congratulated Gaethje on his victory and the matchup.
