Chelsea v Liverpool: What just happened:
Antonio Conte's Chelsea side welcomed Jurgen Klopp' Liverpool to Stamford Bridge with both clubs free of European comitments this time round. Former Chelsea man David Luiz made his second debut for 'The Blues' after his big money return from Paris Saint-Germain. Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren were drafted into the starting XI by Klopp as they replaced Roberto Firmino and fellow Brazilian Lucas.
Liverpool started the brighter of the pair in the opening 5 minutes as Daniel Sturridge shifted to his left foot on the right hand side of the box and seen his effort spillerd by Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois who was then fortunate to see the ball not slide over the line as he scrambled to make amends. Liverpool won themselves a free kick near the corner spot after Branislav Ivanovic trodded on the foot of Adam Lallana after bringing down the England midfielder. Liverpool were enjoying the more fruitful spells of possession as they looked to capitalise on the already knowledgeable uncertain partnership of John Terry and David Luiz. Jordan Henderson failed with an audacious half volley from outside the area after a Liverpool corner was half cleared by the London side. Branislav Ivanovic gave away another needless free kick after a challenge on Wijnaldum and the eventual cross found an unmarked Sadie Mané and Dejan Lovren, as the Serbian centre half fired home past Courtois will aplomb to give the Merseyside team a deserved lead at The Bridge after some non existent marking by the Chelsea defence. Chelsea were starting to find some more of the ball after 25 minutes with Diego Costa linking up well with Eden Hazard while David Luiz had a long range effort blocked. Stamford Bridge was sent into silence after a half an hour when a clearance from Gary Cahill found it's way to Jordan Henderson, one touch shifted it onto his favoured right foot and from about 30 yards out, he unleashed a curling effort which left 6 foot 4 inch shot stopper Thibaut Courtois a mere spectator as he is best efforts couldn't tell prevent a second goal for 'The Kop'. The
England man certainly has a long range effort in his arsenal bringing back memories of his Anfield strike against Manchester City. The half time whistle sounded with boos ringing around the Bridge.
The second half began with Liverpool getting us underway. Chelsea looked for an early goal as Willian's cross fell to Oscar but a ricochet sent it out for a goal kick. Chelsea were looking to Willian and Ivanovic to supply their attacks and the latter made his way into the area on one occasion before going down easily under a James Milner tackle as the referee awarded a goal kick to Liverpool. Chelsea found a deserving gal after some poor defending Liverpool allowed a run from Nemanja Matic to go unchallenged as the ball fell to in form striker Diego Costa who bundled the ball past Mignolet to give his side a real lifeline with over a half an hour to play. Our then knocked a header down to Costa and a quick sort out of his feet opened up a swivel shot which was unfortunately for Chelsea, straight at Mignolet, either side and it's 2-2. Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi was spotted going through his rigorous warm up as Conte looked for a late equaliser from the former Marseille and Standered Leige man. Earlier Daniel Sturridge replacement Divock Origi produced a decent save from Courtois as Liverpool looked to wrap up 3 points away from Anfield. Chelsea introduced a triplet of substitutions with Victor Moses, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro replaced Willian, Matic and Oscar. Who just 3 minutes before the 90, Lucas brought down Eden Hazard on the edge of the area as David Luiz vyed with Fabregas over who should step up. It was the Spaniard who took the set pieceut it hit Wijnaldum in the wall, maybe a shout for handball. Wijnaldum was then replaced by former Spurs youngster Kevin Stewart with just added time between Liverpool and all three points in London. Former Liverpool loanee Victor Moses won a late corner which was eventually cleared by a red shirt.Diego Costa was ruled offside after a knockdown as Jordan Henderson'ls superb strike proved to be the difference at The Bridge.
