Manchester United v Zorya Luhansk:
Manchester United welcomed Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk to Old Trafford as they looked to pick up their first 3 points of the UEFA Europa League group stage campaign. Wayne Rooney continued on the bench for United after their 4-1 home win against Leicester City last Saturday. Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Marouane Fellaini came in for Antonio Valencia, David De Gea, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba started in a strong Manchester United side. French forward Anthony Martial came back into the United side, starting n the bench since his head injury against Watford. Zorya were very unlucky not to pick up all 3 points against Fenerbache in their opening group stage fixture when a last minute deflected strike shared the spoils.
Manchetser United got us underway in the first half passing the ball around nicely inside the opening 5 minutes. Juan Mata's corner wasn't directed goal wards as Marouane Fellaini rose highest. A quick counter attack from Zorya was defended well by Chris Smalling as he cleared for a throw in. Paul Pogba sent Jesse Lingard away with a great ball and the English winger won a corner after some good defending from Zorya. United were dominating possession with 80% to Zorya's 20% after 15 mintues. Ibrahimovic was urged to shoot from outside the area and the deflection sent the ball wide for a corner which was easily defended. Pogba piled on the pressure winning another corner with Juan Mata's corner falling to Marcus Rashford who smashed the bar on the half volley from just inside the area. With just under a half an hour played, United were creating the more clear cut chances with Rashford going to the closest. Used had a free kick in a decent area with Ibrahimovic standing over it but it was straight into the wall. Neither side created many more chances before the break with the referee blowing the half time whistle with United lacking that cutting edge up top.
Zorya kicked off for the second period and should have been ahead inside the opening passages after a good delivery just missed the oncoming foot of the on rushing striker. Marouane Fellaini made some decent moves of the edge of the box but his shot was eventually blocked. Jesse Lingard then seen his cross easily held by Shevchenko in the Zorya goal. Zorya made their first substitute with. Paulinho replacing Kulach. Mata's cross into the area was agin delt with by Shevchenko. It looked as if Jose Mourinho was going to call upon Wayne Rooney to try and turn things around from a lacklustre United who were yet to have a shot on target all game. Wayne Rooney replaced Jesse Lingard with 35 mintues to play as Juan Mata moved to the right and Rashford swapped to the left flank. United finally took the lead with Zlatan Ibrahimovic heading home from on the line after Rooney's miscue, 1-0 lead to a disappointing United. Anthony Martial And Ashley Young were the next United players to be introduced to the fray as they replaced Juan Mata and Timothy Fosu-Mensah. Zorya were pressing for a late equaliser with United giving the ball away cheaply. Utes won a late free kick in a decent position and once again Zlatan stepped up and Shevchenko got across his goal quickly to prevent a 2nd for the Swede. The referee added on 3 minutes of added time as Zorya stared an unlucky defeat in the face, as United kept possession to see out a 1-0 win.
