Southampton v Swansea City:

Claude Peul's 'Saints' welcomed Swansea City to St. Mary's stadium after their Thursday night triumph over Sparta Prague in the Europa League. 'The Swans' last outing in the Premier League came in the form of a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at The Liberty stadium. Southampton dominated the chances in the opening half with Dusan Tadic and Virgil van Dijk producing stops from Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianski to prevent the home side taking the lead. The best chance of the opening half fell to new signing Nathan Redmond as the former Norwich City man, clear through on goal with Shane Long in support, selfishly blasted high and wide over the Swansea crossbar which left Long fuming. Moments later, it was deja vu for the winger as he again let 'The Swans' off the hook after turning his defender inside out as he sent the ball over the bar. Peul's half time team talk must have really spurred his side on as they made a blistering start to the second period, with Shane Long producing a goal line clearance from Kyle Naughton after beating Fabianski. The Southampton side were left angered moments later as Shane Long found the net finally, but the deliverer Nathan Redmond was wrongly accused of being in an offside position. Frustration was starting to set in for the home side when Charlie Austin's header hit the ball before rolling the wrong side of the post. Peul's men were grateful that Nathan Redmond's deflected effort fell to the inform Austin as he lashed home to grab his third goal in two games after his brace against Sparta Prague on Thursday night. It was a poor showing from Swansea as Francesco Guidolin's side could only muster up a late effort as Glyfi Sigurdsson was denied by the quiet Fraser Forster. A good result for Southampton, but a result that required hard work and determination.
