What next for Alexander Gustafsson?
Popular Swedish Light Heavyweight Alexander 'The Mauler' Gustafsson got back to winning ways last night after displaying a wrestling clinic against unranked Pole Jan Blachowicz. Gustafsson, found himself on the wrong side of results against Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson, and most recently, Daniel 'DC' Cormier and was contemplating stepping away from the octagon, but last nights victory may have just reignited the Swede's fire and hunger to fight.
The 29 year old Arboga native came into last nights bout as the #2 ranked Light Heavyweight in the UFC but the former two time title contender may have to be patient with a title fight between current champion Cormier and former foe Anthony Johnson slated to take place at Madison Square Garden at UFC 205 in November. Interestingly, Gustafsson may also have to wait on the future of Jon 'Bones' Jones, with the former pound for pound kingpin, under investigation by USADA for a potential anti doping violation, before his UFC 200 main event against Daniel Cormier.
The matchup between 'Rumble' and 'DC' was made all the more possible after Johnson's 13 second demolition of Brazilian veteran Glover Teixiera. Another man looking to earn himself a title shot is #4 ranked, Ryan 'Darth' Bader, with the American coming off a devastatingly head kick KO of Malmo man Ilir Latifi. Bader faced Johnson before last nights expedition and was completely outclassed by the hard hitting former Middleweight before being finished on the ground. Former UFC Interim Light Heavyweight Championship challenger Ovince Saint Preux may find himself back in the title picture after the defeat of Teixiera with the Texas native recently beaten by Jon Jones in their 5 round tussle. The American holds an impressive KO victory over Brazil legend Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua when the pair met. Either Bader or OSP could now find themselves with the challenge of Gustafsson ahead of them after a shift in the Light Heavyweight rankings.
