Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor to throw down at UFC 205:

As expected, Philadelphia's UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will defend his title against current UFC Featherweight champion, 'The Notorious' Conor McGregor. The Irishman will be looking to become the first consecutive two weight world champion, with a win over Alvarez, adding the Lightweight crown to his Featherweight strap. Rumours of the potential bout were rife pu until last week, when Dana White dismissed the title bout between the pair, telling how 'team Kabib' would get the title fight with Alvarez. The man in question, Khabib Nurmagomedov posted two intriguing images to social media showing two bout agreements to face Alvarez at UFC 205, or UFC 206 in Canada. Since that post, by the Dagestan native, his dreams have been dashed as White has elected to set up a main event slot between Alvarez and McGregor instead. So where does this fight leave the Featherweight division. December 2015 was the last time current 145lbs title holder Conor McGregor fought at Featherweight, with two Welterweight bouts against Nate Diaz occupying his time. An Interim Featherweight title was introduced to the divisor with former P4P King Jose Aldo beating Frankie Edgar at the monumental UFC 200 in July. According to Dana White, if McGregor were to achieve the unthinkable and hold two belts at once, he will have to make a decision on which one to relinquish. The most obvious answer would his Featherweight strap, thus handing the title who Aldo, and the first title defence for the would be 2 time champion should undoubtedly be Hawaii star Max Holloway. The 24 year old has gone on a tear winning 9 in a row since his unanimous decision loss to McGregor back in 2013. The 9 fight win streak has seen Holloway beat Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Jeremy Stephens and most recently Ricardo Lamas. Another factor involved in McGregor's decision is the brutal weight cut the Dublin born star endured to compete at 145lbs. a much more intriguing division for the Irish man is certainly the Lightweight division, especially in terms of weight and 'money fights'. If McGregor were to beat Alvarez at UFC 205, and then vacate the Featherweight title, a rubber match between himself and Nate Diaz for the Lightweight title, would be a mind blowing end to their terrific trilogy. Another title fight to make after the event, if McGregor were to triumph, is certainly a matchup with last March's originally planned opponent, Rafael Dos Anjos, or a monstrous matchup between Conor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. A win for Eddie Alvarez could also set up a Nate Diaz title defence with the pair said to have had a run in in Mexico recently. Either way, the matchup between Alvarez and McGregor will be something to uphold, so make sure to stay tuned to hear my fight breakdown closer to the bout.
