A potential bantamweight title eliminator between former division champion, Holly 'The Preacher's Daughter' Holm, and perennial contender, Irene Aldana is set to headline a UFC Fight Night Vegas event on August 1st.
Returning to the win-column following her high-kick knockout defeat to current titleholder, Amanda Nunes at UFC 239 last July - Albuquerque favourite, Holm, took a second career victory over Raquel Pennington, at UFC 246 in January. Mexico native, Aldana has won her last two consecutively, scoring a shocking first-round knockout of the then undefeated, Ketlen Vieira at UFC 245 in December. News of the main event matching was initially reported by ESPN writer, Brett Okamoto.
Holm, 38, likely best known for her earth-shattering stoppage of Ronda Rousey back at UFC 193 to claim the bantamweight throne, has faltered to a 3-5 record since. The former boxing world champion dropped the title to Miesha Tate in the final round of their UFC 196 clash, before a loss to flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko. Appearing alongside Germaine de Randamie in the promotion's inaugural featherweight title matchup, Holm dropped a dubious unanimous decision, despite de Randamie landing twice after the claxon on two separate occasions.
In wins since then, Holm has finished Bethe Correia, out-pointed Megan Anderson, as well as the above-noted win over Pennington. Currently sitting at #2 at 135-pounds behind the previously mentioned, de Randamie - a victory over Aldana may be enough to warrant Holm a sixth outing with gold up for spoils with the promotion.
Culiacán native, Aldana has garnered much following off the back of her stunning stoppage of Vieira back in December. The 32-year-old who closes out the top-five at bantamweight had scored a prior unanimous judging over Vanessa Melo, after a razor-thin decision defeat at the hands of the aforementioned, Pennington back at UFC Fight Night San Antonio in July.
Since her arrival in the promotion off the back of a run which included an unsuccessful title challenge in Invicta FC - the Mexican has established a 5-3 record. Apart from the close judging loss to Pennington, defeats have come against Leslie Smith, and one-time flyweight title challenger, Katlyn Chookagian - both decision judgings once more. After the loss to Chookagian, the Lobo Gym trainee returned to the winner's enclosure with a trio of victories over Talita Bernardo, Lucie Pudilová, and the previously penned, Correia.
