A middleweight meeting between surging contender, Omari 'Wolverine' Akhmedov, and former division champion, Chris 'The All American' Weidman is slated to feature at a UFC event on August 8th. - with a location and venue yet to be determined.
Looking to extend his winning streak to four fights, Dagestan native, Akhmedov last scored a unanimous decision win over former interim LFA middleweight best, Ian Heinisch at UFC 245 in December. Returning to his old stomping ground of 185-pounds, Weidman will look to rebound from a light heavyweight debut knockout against, Dominick Reyes. News of the middleweight tie was initially reported by TASS reporter, Igor Lazorin.
Akhmedov, 32, added Heinisch to an eye-catching run which also includes victories over both Zak Cummings, and Tim Boetsch. In another career highlight triumph, the all-rounder handed Abdul Razak Alhassan his one and only career blemish. Since his promotional bow back in November of 2013, Akhmedov has managed to score an 8-3-1 record.
Former middleweight gold holder, Weidman, will look to finally return to the winner's enclosure, following five knockout losses in his last six Octagon appearances. Before a victory over one-time interim title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum, the Baldwin native had dropped losses to Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero, and Gegard Mousasi. Before his loss to Reyes, Weidman faltered opposite former Strikeforce middleweight best, Jacaré Souza.
The 35-year-old holds notable career championship wins over Brazilian trio, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, and Anderson Silva (x2), as well as Mark Muñoz, and Demian Maia. Weidman was expected to meet with Jack Hermansson at UFC Fight Night Oklahoma City in April - until the entire card was shelved amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
