UFC Fight Night 90: Dos Anjos V Alvarez. What just happened.
UFC fight night 90 seen Brazilian Lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos defend his title against Eddie Alvarez.
Joe Duffy V Mitch Clarke: Irish native Joe Duffy takes on Mitch Clarke in the first fight of the main card of UFC Fight Night 90. Duffy last fought and lost to Dustin Poirier and Mitch Clarke losing his last fight against Michael Chiesa. Duffy made a huge statement in his return to the octagon and scored a first round submission after a knockdown with a huge right hand and finished with a rear naked choke in an absolutely dominating display over Motch Clarke.
Alan Jouban V Belal Muhammad: Alan Jouban takes on the 9-0 Belal Muhammad as the undeafted Welterweight makes his UFC debut tonight. The undefeated Chicago man looked very relaxed during his walk to the octagon, as did fan favourite Alan Jouban who sang his way to battle. Jouban opened with a good calf kick, then Jouban landed a good left hook which dropped Muhammed but he recovered well. Muhammad then shot for a takedown and then swepped. Jouban then scored a second knockdown and landed some vicious elbows and punches but again Muhammed's chin stood firm as he managed to make it to the 2nd round. Belal then dominated the Octagon and effectively used his jab before being knocked down for a 3rd time and again recovered. Jouban then used some good takedown defence to prevent being taken to the mat. Muhammad then scored a late takedown at the end of the second round. Muhammad realistically needed a finish if he were to win this fight with Jouban winning the first 2 rounds. Muhammad then did well to tag Jouban and test his chin throughout the third round. Mohammed then began to tee off on Jouban but had to be careful not to gas out. Muhammad then landed a flurry of strikes and nearly finished Jouban with a spinning back fist and Jouban was saved by the bell. Alan Jouban did enough in the judges eyes to warrant a victory as he scored 3 knockdowns. Interestingly, Jouban told how he think he broke his left hand in the second round.
Roy Nelson V Derrick Lewis: Roy 'Big Country' Nelson takes on Derrick 'Black Beast' Lewis with both men possessing enormous knock out power and very heavy hands in a fight where everyone is expecting a knockout. 'Big country ' looks very confident on his way to the octagon, coming off a victory over Jared Rosholt. Fan favourite Roy Nelson received a huge ovation during Bruce Buffer's introduction. Derrick Lewis opening with a huge knee and kick to the body. The two men then engaged in a clinch against the cage with 'Big John' McCarthey encouraging some work before splitting them up. Lewis then smashed Nelson with a huge head kick before being taken down by Nelson. Nelson was then hurt by Lewis who continued to use punishing knees to the body, similar to Alistair Overeem's approach when fighting 'Big Country'. They again engaged in a clinch before being split up again. Lewis again targeted the body with Nelson scoring a second takedown as the round ended. Round 2 started with Nelson looking for a huge overhand right. A huge jumping knee from Lewis found Nelson's body again as more welts began to form on Roy's body. They clinched again with Nelson looking for a takedown and landed a 3rd takedown and wound up in side control where he may look for a crucifix or a submission, with 'Big Country' holding a black belt in Brazilain Jiu Jitsu. Nelson scored a 4th takedown but Lewis immediately got back up before being taken down a 5th time and looked for the crucifix but Lewis got back up before the end of the second round. Round 3 was all to play for with both men holding a round win in my opinion. Round 3 with a huge overhand left missing by Lewis before landing another flying knee to the body but could result in a huge loss of energy. A sixth takedown landed for Nelson as Lewis' takedown defence was non existent. Nelson landed a 7th take done as it looked like he was doing enough to win the round and probably the fight. Another clinch occurred with McCarthey separating again. Lewis would need to finish if he wanted to win and landed some huge strikes. Derrick Lewis somehow managed to convince the judges he done enough after being completely dominated in the last round, with Roy landing a total of 7 takedowns, but Lewis landed 51 strikes with Nelson only landing 4.
UFC Lightweight Championship: Rafael Dos Anjos (C) V Eddie Alvarez: The main event sees Rafael Dos Anjos defend his title against former Bellator Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez with Brazilian coming off a second victory over Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone, with Alvarez coming off a huge victory over former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. Dos Anjos is returning from a broken metatarsal injury which he sustained while preparing to face Dubliner Conor McGregor at UFC 196. Alvarez looked extremely confident during his walk out and Dos Anjos will have to watch out for his fantastic wrestling and brawling ability, as the American stepped into the octagon for his first title fight in the UFC. Dos Anjos will defend the title for the 2nd time tonight and is looking better in every fight we see him in. The Brazilian looked like a man on a mission as he jogged to the octagon to defend his title. Alvarez must be aware of Dos Anjos' aggressive pace and tendency to hunt down his opponent early in the fight. The first round began with Alvarez landing a good leg kick and as expected a fast aggressive Dos Anjos and leg kick of his own. Dos Anjos had Alvarez pinned against the fence and as Alvarez shot for a takedown, he was caught in a guillotine and quickly escaped. Alvarez then rocked Dos Anjos as the champ looked in trouble and managed to tee off on the champ and Herb Dean called an end to the fight as the American stopped the Brazilian in the first round. Great stoppage from Herb Dean as Alvarez was landing multiple shots without a response from Dos Anjos.
