Germany V Italy: What just happended

Germany faced Italy in the quarter finals of Euro 2016 with the winner advancing to a semi final tie against either France or minnows Iceland.Germany dominated the possession in the opening 15 minutes with very little to no chances in the first 15 minutes with Florenzi sending his shot wide from about 25 yards out. Sami Khedira was forced off early and was replaced by Manchester United midfielder and world cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger. Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon earned his 160th cap for the Azzurri and was first called into action when German forward Mario Gomez mis-controlled the ball and Buffon collected. Schweinsteiger had a goal dissolved with just over 25 minutes gone as he fouled his marker before heading home. Germany were dominating the possession as expected s Italy looked to suss out the side in the opening half hour. Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich found former Bayern striker Mario Gomez in the box and the Fiorentina striker headed over. Juventus midfielder Sturaro had a decent strike but Manuel Neuer was relieved to see it flash past the post and out for a corner. The first half drew to a close with both teams on level terms with not many real, clear cut chances falling to either side, Germany were definitely the better side with more chances being created by the World Cup winners with Italy looking timid and cautious of the pace on Germany's wings.

Italy started the second half the brightest with Eder looking sharp in the opening passages of play
The best chance of the half fell to Thomas Muller who seen his shot deflect off the Italian defender and fly past the post for a corner. From the resulting corner, former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng let fly from 30 odd yards out and sent it over the bar. Marco Parolo then sent a shot well wide with the game becoming a tad more open. Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil then opened the scoring as Jonas Hector was played through after a brillant reverse past and Ozil found the net ending Buffon's clean sheet record. Mario Gomez then will a beutiful deft flick produed a huge save from Buffon as Germany looked to kill the game off. Wolfsburg midfielder Julian Draxler replaced the injured Mario Gomez. In the last 15 minutes Italy had to create some sort of chance to sneak an equaliser, and it seemed unlikely with Italy not having their best night in front of goal. Jerome Boateng was then accused of handball by the referee in the penalty area with Italy given a huge chance to equalise. Juventus centre half Leonardo Bonucci stepped up against Neuer and buried the spot kick to give the Italians a life line and find that precious equaliser. Graziano Pellé then won the Blues a corner as they looked to nick a late winner, but Muller cleared easily. Alessandro Florenzi was then replaced by Manchester United's Matteo Darmian with just 5 minutes to go of the 90. A.C. Milan wing-back De Sciglio then let fly from the edge of the box and seen the ball hit the side netting. Bayern Munich centre half Mats Hummels ruled himself out of any participation in any semi final with a late booking.

Extra time will be needed to separate the 2 sides with 90 minutes not enough to establish a winner. Southampton forward Graziano Pellé will also miss the semi final tie if Italy are to make it past the Germans. It was a drab first period of extra time, quite similar to he Portugal and Poland game.

The second period of extra time began with the introduction of Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne for Inter Milan striker Edér. Germany then hit Italy on the counter attack but a poor pass from Draxler allowed Italy to get back and clear the ball. Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil tested Gianluigi Buffon with a shot from just outside the area but the former Parma shot stopper was equal to the strike. Georgio Chiellini was replaced with Juventus striker Simone Zaza with Antonio Conte keeping spot kicks in mind.

A penalty shootout would again separate a quarter final with the match failing to live up to the expectations. Italy won the toss with Lorenzo Insigne the first to step up for the spot kick at the Italian end and the Napoli forward made it 1-0 to the Italians sending Neuer the wrong way. Toni Kroos was next up for the German's first spot kick and found Buffon's right hand corner to make it 1-1. Simone Zaza took the second and skied it to give Germany an advantage. Thomas Muller missed his spot kick to keep the score at 1-1. Andrea Barzagli was next to step up and gave them a 2-1 advantage. Goalscorer Ozil was next and he cracked the woodwork and put it wide. Pellé stepped up and missed his spot kick as the score stayed 2-1. Julian Draxler smashed it home to make it 2-2. Leonardo Bonucci looking to score his second penalty was denied by Manuel Neuer. Bastian Schweinsteiger was the man to put Germany into the semi final but he missed as it would take sudden death to decide a winner. Giacherini sent his down the middle as Mats Hummels needed to score to keep Germany's dream alive and even though Buffon got a hand to it, it crept it. Marco Parolo scored with Germany again needing a saviour in the form of Joshua Kimmich who made no mistake in finding the net. Mattia De Sciglio was next in line and luckily got the better of the bar as it also flew home. Jerome Boateng scored his penalty to make it 5-5. Matteo Darmian seen his penalty saved, with Germany needing one more successful penalty to win with Jonas Hector given the chance which he took to knock the Italians out and set up a tie against the French or Iceland in the semis.
