Portugal V France: What just happened.

Portugal took on hosts France in the Euro 2016 final at Stade de France. Portugal beat Wales in the semi finals to make there way here with France knocking out World Cup winners Germany. France dominated the early possession spells and looked to constantly find golden boot leader Antoine Griezmann. Nani then at the other end had a good chance for the Portuguese but seen his half volley good over Lloris' crossbar. Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko then seen his shot wide. Antoine Griezmann also fired wide from a difficult angle. Cristiano Ronaldo then went down as himself and West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet clashed knees. Leading goal scorer Griezmann then nearly opened the scoring but Rui Patricio made a wonderful save. From the corner Olivier Giroud had his header saved by Patricio. Portugal weren't really creating chances as they made a slow start to the final. Ronaldo was still really the effects of that recent knee injury and may have to be replaced. Ronaldo then returned to the action after being bandaged up the the Portuguese physios. Ronaldo then went down a third time and was reduced to tears as arguably the world's best was stretched off. Former Chelsea winger Ricardo Quaresma replaced the Real Madrid forward. France were again creating the chances as Portugal's main outlet up top was gone. Moussa Sissoko then seen another shot denied by Rui Patricio. Cédric Soares then picked up a yellow for a high challenge. Nani then with some good footwork found Adrien Silva on the edge of the boxed but couldn't sort out his feet and Guerriro's follow up shot was deflected wide. Portugal were starting to find their rhythm in the late stages of the half as a big second half lay ahead for both sides with the score 0-0.

The second half began with Pepe of Real Madrid feigning injured. Portugal kept the ball well in the opening passages.  Pepe then made a huge challenge on Payet as France looked promising. From a corner Patricio then spiller the ball but gratefully collected it at the second attempt. Manchester United target Paul Pogba then seen his volley from about 30 yards sail over the bar. Kingsley Coman then replaced Dimitri Payet for the last half an hour as France looked to try and find a goal to take the lead. Coman was immediately involved as he found Griezmann who fired straight at Patricio at his near post. France were looking the more likely side to score as they kept the ball well and were patient in their build up.  Antoine Griezmann missed a golden opportunity to give his side the lead. Adrian Silva was then replaced by Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho. Kingsley Coman then sent his shot well wide. With 15 minutes remaining of the 90, France were pushing for a goal but the Portuguese defence held out and defended well against the onslaught. Olivier Giroud then produced a huge save from Rui Patricio as the Arsenal striker looked to put France a goal to the good. Andre Pierre Gignac then replaced Olivier Giroud as Lille striker Eder replaced the young Renato Sanches for Portugal. Portugal then very nearly took the lead as Nani's cross nearly beat Lloris, then from the rebound, Ricardo Quaresma with an overhead kick produced a second stop from the Tottenham keeper. Rui Patricio then kept the score at 0-0 when he denied Moussa Sissoko from range again. Extra time looked in the cards with the score still 0-0 and only 4 minutes plus added time remaining. Then with 1 minute of added time remaining Andre Pierre Gignac was denied by the lost after turning his marker as the game stayed level. Extra time and maybe penalties will have to seperate the sides with the 90 minutes up.

Similar to the beginning of the second half, Portugal were keeping the ball well in the opening stages. Pepe seen his header from a free kick go just wide but he was adjudged as offside. Some great footwork by Pogba won France corner but Griezmann's delivery beat Evernote and resulted in a Portugal throw in. Nani then won a corner with Pepe and Umtiti getting into an argument in the box. Jose Fonte then produced a huge save from Hugo Lloris as France just about survived.

Moutinho then tried to get Blaise Matuidi sent off as he went down without a rich from the PSG midfielder. New Borussia Dortmund full back Raphael Guerriro from a controversial free kick hit the crossbar as Portugals best chance had come and gone. Then finally we had a goal. Eder who had only played 16 minutes before this game found Lloris' bottom corner from 25 yards out. The man who plays his trade in Lille, may have just won the European Chanpionships for Portugal. Anthony Martial was then introduced in one last roll of the dice for France. Portugal defended stoutly with Paul Pogba especially frustrated with his teammates as they looked to have fallen short as hosts. Joao Maroo was then set away by Quaresma with a robona pass but France got back and sniffed out the danger to disposes Mario. Martial with the last chance seen his shot blocked with two French bodies in offside postions. It was too little too late for France as Portugal were crowned European Champions.
